Part V: 1978-1993

During the last decade of Chavez’s life, the union shrank in membership but increased in political clout, and Chavez became a revered Chicano leader. The black eagle became a brand, and Chavez focused on entrepreneurial ventures like housing developments. He fought to ban pesticides, staged his longest fast, and was in great demand as a speaker on college campuses. He died in his sleep on April 23, 1993.
