Photographs were an essential resource for me as I wrote this book. I pored over thousands of images to help understand a long-ago time and place. The selections in these six sections – different from the 50 photos in the book itself – are a scrapbook designed to convey some sense of the sweep of Chavez’s life.
We begin with three places that were very important to Chavez: The home where he grew up, the Delano site he fashioned into the union’s first headquarters, and La Paz, the mountainous retreat Chavez chose as the union’s home, where he lived and where he was buried.
